Denmark Driving Trip Planner

Have fun driving in Denmark!
This driving trip planner has been especially written for Denmark.
We begin our drive through Denmark in Copenhagen. Home to the world’s largest pedestrian street and to the world-famous statue of the Little Mermaid, the fairytale city of Copenhagen is Scandinavia’s largest city and one of its liveliest. Dotted with parks, gardens, fountains and squares, the city combines a charming laid-back feel with an exciting, exuberant atmosphere.

Day 1-2

Begin your exploration of the city at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, a museum owned by the famous brewery that features outstanding classical art and fine Impressionist painting. Witness the pomp and ceremony of the changing of the guard at Copenhagen’s Amalienborg Palace-home of the Royal Family since 1794, or take a trip to the Helligandskirke, one of Copenhagen’s oldest churches, which also features a summer café and regular art exhibitions.

Don’t miss the Tivoli Gardens, located in the heart of Copenhagen. This century-old amusement park is one of Copenhagen’s most popular attractions and with its thousands of flowers and dazzling bejewelled lights, it is a real-life wonderland of rides, restaurants, and entertainment for young and old alike. Sample the live classical music at Tivoli Concert Hall or stumble across free outdoor performances at one of the many city parks and squares. Lose yourself along Stroget, the world’s longest pedestrian street, where you can dine at one of the many cafes and restaurants and marvel at the many street performers.

Enjoy an afternoon picnic in one of the city’s many parks and squares and visit a museum before dining either in the summer air or indoors at winter under the subtle glow of candlelight in magical Copenhagen. Sample the magic of Copenhagen, a fairytale city that allows you explore at an enjoyable pace.

Day 3-4

Take the trip north along the E55 to the north of Zealand to marvel at the power and beauty of nature in front of you. The north of the island is charged with the power and drama of nature, as it is the point at which the Baltic and the North seas meet, creating a noisy and chaotic symphony whose music has echoed for millions of years. Pay a visit to busy Helsingor, from where ferries operate 24 hours a day to nearby Sweden. Take a jolly jaunt across the water to Denmark’s near neighbour or take the time out to appreciate the historic old quarters. The highlight of Helsingor is without question its imposing Kronborg Slot, which was made famous in Shakespeare’s Hamlet as Elsinore Castle. Dating from the 1420s, this castle retains the king’s and queen’s chambers and a spooky bat-filled dungeon.

Day 5

From Helsingor, take Route 6 south towards Roskilde, the first capital of Denmark. World famous for its popular Roskilde Rock Festival, this medieval town presents an array of delights all within easy walking distance of each other. The Roskilde Domkirke is the town’s imposing cathedral dating from as far back as 1170. The cathedral acts as the resting-place for 37 Danish kings and Queens and announces this to all who visit the town through its tall and impressive spires and a splendid interior. A visit to Roskilde is incomplete without seeing its Vikingeskibshallen, the Viking ship museum that displays five reconstructed Viking ships that were discovered and excavated from the Roskilde Fjord in 1962.

Day 6

Join Route 6 from Roskilde and connect with Route 31 to visit Koge. This town enjoys a rich medieval history and is blessed with a large natural harbour and an historic central quarter that has been brilliantly restored and preserved. Take a stroll around the cobbled streets flanked by wooden houses and enjoy a bite to eat in one of the many outdoor cafes and restaurants here. Enjoy a spot of window shopping before visiting the impressive Koge Museum, located in a building dating from 1619. This easy-to-manage museum features exhibits dealing with the history of Koge and the surrounding area from prehistoric times to the present day. Take a cycling tour of the immediate environs of the town before returning and enjoying a refreshing drink in one of the many bars and restaurants of this charming town.

Day 7

For the final day of this memorable and enjoyable holiday, take the E20 northwards towards Copenhagen. Here you can stop off at your leisure along the way and enjoy a refreshing stroll along the many unspoiled beaches along the way. Enjoy an ice cream or a picnic by the sea and watch the sailing boats enjoy the relative shelter of the attractive Koge Bugt bay. Continue along this attractive stretch of motorway and enjoy the return to Copenhagen, where you might just have time for a quick spot of lunch, giving you time to mull over your memories of Denmark, a wonderful country with many delights.
