Denmark’s best-kept secret...
Rich and fertile Lolland is located south of Zealand, offering something out of the ordinary for the traveller. With its relatively flat landscape, the island is very farm-oriented, and the landscape is dotted with charming farming villages and wide expanses of well-maintained crops. The pastoral outlook is tempered with the drama and beauty of several fjords and lakes, a testament to the wild and untamed savagery of nature.
The largest town in Lolland is Maribo, located in an idyllic lake district in the centre of the island. The choice setting of this commercial and geographical centre-it is nestled around the northern banks of Lake Sonderso-makes it a popular location for nature lovers and those who appreciate the finer aspects of Denmark’s history and character. The cathedral known as the Maribo Domkirke is the jewel of this little town and contains in its atmospheric crypt the remains of Princess Leonora Christine, daughter of King Christian IV. The town also boasts an impressive neoclassical 19th-century town hall and some typically Danish 18th-century timber-frame houses. On the eastern bank of the lake lies Lolland’s Bangshane wood, thick with beech trees and perfect for hiking, picnics and bird watching. Take a trip to the nearby Storstroms Kunstmuseum featuring regional art from the 18th to the 20th century and the Frilandmuseum, a fascinating open-air museum where you can experience the life of yesteryear beneath the sails of its delightful wooden windmill. For a real trip back in time, why not enjoy a trip on the Museumbanen, an antique steam train whose jolly jaunts to the north of Lolland delight both young and old. While in the north, a visit to the Knuthenborg Safari Park is an absolute must. With special events such as helicopter rides, showjumping and falconry displays scheduled all year round, this drive-through park houses such exotic creatures as zebras, rhinoceroses, giraffes and camels. Located on the lawns of what once was Denmark’s largest privately held estate, the park also boasts over 500 varieties of trees and plants and seven miniature English-style castles. Other delights of Lolland include Sakskobing, known as "the smiling town," one of Northern Europe’s oldest inhabited castles at Aalholm Slot and Automobil Museum, and Nakskov, a tiny town featuring a unique museum on board a Russian submarine.
Cycle across the fertile pastoral landscape, enjoy the fresh produce on offer from the friendly locals, or take a ferry trip to one of the unspoiled and windswept islands scattered around. Above all, take time out to relax and enjoy the sights, the sounds and the echoes of history in Lolland, Denmark’s best-kept secret.
